Quirky wedding photos to make you smile during lockdown

Despite her young age I’m pretty sure this little girl is thinking “Men - idiots!”

I’ve curated some of my more quirky wedding photos as a fun exercise during the lockdown.

My overall style is to create photographs that are fun and full of life. Sometimes they evoke pure joy, laughter, or happy tears, or surprise - but I always want the viewer to feel something when they see the photograph.

Wedding photographers come in all different styles. Some are purely documentary, some are very stylised (think of Vogue magazine), some are more dark and gritty while others are more light and airy.

There’s no right or wrong, you just choose the style of photographer that suits you. My goal is to put a smile on people’s faces or a tear in their eye. Today’s post is more about the smiles than the tears.

Often the quirky photographs just happen and I capture the moment, but I also have a few tricks up my sleeve too. For example I bring 2 bottles of Prosecco to every wedding - one is to be sprayed around formula 1 style and the other is a prize for whoever performs the best in the group photographs.

I’m always looking for ways to help people come out of their shell and reveal their personality.

The most common way I guarantee great results is to simply ask questions to whoever I’m photographing. For example, if it’s a group shot I might ask what the silliest thing the groom ever did, or who embarrassed themselves most on the stag do / hen do. I have a whole bunch of different things I say and do to help people forget they are being photographed for a split second so I can capture their spirit.

So here are a few of my favourite quirky wedding photos to help put a smile on your face in these challenging times. I’d love to know which one is your favourite in the comments section.

We got photobombed by the local cat but the look on the bride’s face is priceless

This is 4 photographs stitched together to create a quirky wedding composite

Smoking bridesmaids! The boys cracked open the cigars so I jumped in and made sure the girls got a go. They put the lads to shame!

The groom was a keen rugby player and the bride was not one to be left on the sidelines so she got stuck in!

This is one of those moments where things come together perfectly. It looks like the groom is describing the bride’s qualities in glowing terms…!

This is the kind of bizarre, quirky moment that you could never really plan. #random

No son wants to see his mum’s garter, but mum was revelling in torturing him!

This is obviously a staged shot where I got the bride and her bridesmaids to create a chaotic scene.

The two brides get themselves warmed up before they exit their car to greet their guests at the reception.

I gave one of the pageboys my camera so he could pretend to be the world’s youngest wedding photographer!

I like a good silhouette and this bride’s beautiful short dress was crying out for a good spin.

I bring two bottles of bubbly to every wedding - one of which gets sprayed around Formula 1 style!

The bridal party was pretty drunk by this point and it was one quirky photo after another… they were so much fun.

The bride and groom are getting heckled by the bridal party as they try and have a romantic moment.

This is definitely one of the more bizarre wedding photos I’ve ever taken. It was actually my second photographers idea and this bridal party was drunk enough to try it.

She hated herself in the morning!

I love a good wedding umbrella shot and this concept is always a popular one with couples. I love the fact that the bridesmaid on the left has got clobbered while everyone else has done it perfectly!

Lumsdale falls in the Peak District is beautiful and a perfect spot for some wedding photographs

I was a kid in a candy shop photographing this steampunk wedding at Normanton Church.

The father of the bride was a real character at this Steampunk wedding.

If you want sparkler wedding photos I always recommend getting the longest sparklers possible so they don’t burn out before all the sparklers are lit.

I love an excited bride - sometimes their emotion pours out in tears and other times in cheekiness!

Don’t worry, he didn’t!

The bride takes a chomp out of the groom’s pasty as she can’t wait for the wedding breakfast.

The best man and his mate subtly hit the dance floor…

This wedding had Olympic and Commonwealth gymnasts so I couldn’t resist badgering them into a move.

Getting one wedding guest doing air guitar with their tie round their head is cool, but two…!

I love a good bit of quality graffiti and this was crying out for a photograph with the bride and groom. I’m not suggesting he’s a snake or a reptile though…! In fact they live on my estate and we still meet up.

Didn’t the boys do well! I love wedding guests with a sense of humour.

There were no children at this wedding - the bouncy castle with still an awesome idea!

A bouncy castle is a brilliant addition to any wedding. At least two out of the three of them agree!

My wedding, my castle, keep clear!

The groom has just been accidentally kicked in the testicles by one of the girls. They don’t seem to bothered!

i’m always planning fun wedding group photo ideas and have a huge list of them to draw from.

This wedding had lots of fun competitions and this lady easily downed her wine when requested.

You don’t often see an inflatable dinosaur at a wedding, especially next to a blow up doll…

One glance at this photograph and you know exactly what’s happening! All 3 characters are giving the perfect reactions.

He had a very understanding bride!

I’ve no idea why! And yes, they were very heavy!

This wedding was right next to the A1 so i couldn’t resist!

It’s hard to get peace and quiet on your wedding day so sitting in the bath is often the best place for the bride and groom!

A wedding composite photo is a great way of revealing the personality of the bride or groom.

i’m photobombing my own wedding photo here. It’s because I was both a friend and the photographer so I needed to be in the group photo! I got my second photographer to do a proper one later!

i love the handbag, is it Gucci?

when you’re losing it’s hard to flip the board over with giant chess, so you just have to go on a murderous rampage and hurl the pieces about!

I’d love to tell you what’s happening but I don’t know! #odd

In one, in one, in one!

The groom’s mum being caught in a compromising pose. I’m not sure what she was showing them…

I think you may have needed 5 sizes up…

The bride and groom are both Cambridge university graduates would you believe!

They both caught the bouquet at the same time and neither would let go for about a minute. It started to get uncomfortable and I think I heard growling and hissing!

Don’t worry, it’s the ring finger!

When you have children your romantic wedding photos are likely to get photobombed!

I asked and they obliged!

The bride and groom both worked with people with disabilities and it was lovely to see them having a laugh together.

when I scouted the venue with them I asked if they’d be happy to go down the slide on the wedding day and they were cool enough to say yes.

The groom is carrying his friend on his back as his friend needs a wheel chair. Just look at his face - one of my all time favourite moments.

Yes one of them did hit me. I did ask for it though.

She didn’t quite direct the flow correctly did she!?

I turned around and this is what they were doing.

My loud hailer is both practical and amusing!

Why does the groom always wander off when you need him for photographs?

Don’t ask how I got her to laugh!

not the traditional use of a space-hopper but still fun I guess.

One of the bridesmaids could down a pint in under 5 seconds. And look at the size of the bride’s litre of beer!

She told me she was the selfie queen so I figured she needed a blinging camera to match!

She won my bottle of Prosecco during the group photo games

Ha, just look at the bride’s face!

The groom is just cooling off - it was a warm day.

Every bride has this moment at some point!

I think she may want to get married next year!

Ben Sherman’s new range of underwear being modelled…

I’m afraid none of you are a ‘young man’!

And for the main course we have snot!

Your bride is right in front of you!

Look at the next photo…

If you pull your trousers down at a wedding you have to expect a slapped bum!

I’m not 100% sure the archbishop is legit!

I would suggest removing the dress before steaming it! See next photo…

Told you!

I’m kind of a big deal!

I asked him if he could do a handstand and this is what I got!

There’s always a crazy uncle at every wedding. He was awesome.

The father of the groom was an absolute legend and he ruled the dancefloor.

The groom and his dad oozing with sex appeal.

A quick paddle made a beautiful photograph.

The two groomsmen saw me photographing the bride and groom and decided to steal the show!
