Family food fight and water fight photoshoot
/Family food fight and water fight photoshoot
The idea of a family food fight and water fight was the winning idea when I did a competition asking for the best family photoshoot theme.
The winning family got the photoshoot free of charge as long as they were prepared to go through with their idea. And boy did Libby and her extended family throw themselves into it with enthusiasm!
We liaised beforehand on what food would look good in the photographs without having to spend a fortune.
Some of the best food for a family food fight are:
Spaghetti
Trifle
Spray cream
Eggs
Chocolate mouse
Bottles of fizzy drink because they spray nicely
A bucket of water and cups to hurl it about with
Water pistols
Hosepipe
All these things and more were laid out on a table in the front garden.
To get things started I asked them to all line up and each throw a piece of the food at me at once. After all - never ask anyone to do anything you’re not prepared to do yourself!
After that it was 3-2-1 GO and all hell was unleashed.
I think every crossed word, vendetta and grudge was settled in 30 minutes of hilarious chaos.
In all seriousness, all the family members joined with the perfect amount of gusto.
No-one was too rough and no-one got hurt, but there was just enough ‘violence’ to get fantastic expressions of fear and glee.
After the fight everyone got cleaned up with the hose before some of the children launched themselves down their water slide.
Are family food fights frivolous or do they hold important benefits?
It could be argued that it’s a waste of good food, but I think that’s short sighted.
A family that plays together stays together. The photographs clearly show the pure joy everyone is experiencing. How do you think the children will view their parents after something as unique, fun and bonding as this?
Look at the hugs at the end of the fight. There’s genuine affection and happiness. Family photoshoots are about connecting as a family and creating happy memories, so a family food fight ticks a lot of boxes.
They’ll also be talking about this in 50 years.
Before a photoshoot 80% of my clients tell me they don’t like being photographed. I have lots of tricks and tactics to help families relax in front of the camera and behave naturally, but a family food fight is hard to beat if you’re looking for something fun to do on a photoshoot that will distract you from the camera.
And hey - the great thing about food fights is you meant to look a mess, so it removes all the silly hangups we have about wanting to look perfect in photos.
