Photo of the month - August 2012

Most family portrait photographers will book you over the phone and then the first time you meet them they're having a quick chat with you before getting started on the photography. I feel this is a huge mistake. I always meet my clients before they hire me. This helps us get to know each other better, but also let's me understand exactly what they're after.

From my client's point of view they feel more comfortable around me when the big day comes because I've already met the whole family. Also, it gives me a chance to go away and plan the photography session so that I'm not just making things up as I go along. This month's photo of the month is a great example of this philosophy in action.

I met my client for a chat and I asked them whether there were any local places that they liked to visit and that was emotionally important to them. They mentioned Hinchingbrooke Park near Huntingdon. After they'd hired me I took a visit to the park and spent an hour wandering around looking for the best places to create some lovely family photos.

I saw a long avenue of trees and noted where the light would be falling at different times of the day. I knew that a long lens would compress the image and give a fantastic tunnel vision effect. I also decided I'd use a fairly shallow depth of field so that the family would be sharp whilst everything else would be nice and soft - almost dream-like. I hope you like the finished result. Thanks for looking
