Grey Heron - British Birds
The Grey heron is the largest European heron. In flight it can be recognised because of its size, but also because its wings are kept in a rounded 'M' shape. It is usually solitary although several birds may feed fairly close together.

WHERE CAN YOU SEE THEM?
Wetland marshes, gravel pits, reservoirs, lakes and rivers and estuaries. Sightings are more often of the heron in flight, but they can also be seen standing silently at the water's edge, waiting for prey. They will also try their luck in garden ponds, much to the frustration of the home owner!

WHEN CAN YOU SEE THEM?
All year round and during the day.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?
Mainly fish, but they are partial to the odd amphibian too.
