After the Hampton Reserve this is probably where I visit most often. Old Sulehay Forest and the adjoining Ring Haw reserve have a lot to offer for two reasons:
1. There are a whole host of different habitats including woodland, open chalk heathland, meadows and mixed scrubland. A mix of habitats means a wide range of wildlife.
2. You're unlikely to see more than one or two people (and one of them will probably be me!)
THE WILDLIFE OF OLD SULEHAY AND RING HAW
This reserve has been turned into swiss cheese by the sheer number of badger setts and fox dens (look for them in the gulley at the far south of the reserve by the stone bridge).
Muntjac deer stalk the thickets and fallow deer warm in the early morning sunshine on the chalk heathland. Most visits yield a sighting of red kites patrolling the open fields for carrion and barn owls quarter the meadow near the Ring Haw field station
I've also seen common lizards in the fields and woodpeckers drum (Greater spotted woodpecker) and yaffle (Green woodpecker) all over the reserve.
The Wildlife Trust do a lot of work to preserve the Green Tiger Beetle at this reserve.
I've actually written an article about the reserves of north Northamptonshire and Old Sulehay is one I covered. To read the article click here: http://www.danwaterscreative.com/photo2093333.html
