Specifier Review - Building Sound Solutions - Articles about hearing loss
Daniel Waters of RNID examines the business case for specifying hearing assistance products.

In the UK approximately 9 million people are either deaf or hard of hearing and around 30% are under 60. This is a huge proportion of the population and they are frequently marginalised, but why? Legally there is the requirement to provide adequate access through the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DDA). But highlighting the financial benefits of providing access is perhaps a more persuasive argument.

With many organisations still not complying with the DDA, any service that provides quality access to deaf and hard of hearing people is gaining a strong competitive advantage and reinforcing their customer service credentials.

HOW RNID PRODUCTS CAN HELP
RNID Products is the deaf equipment arm of RNID, the UK’s largest charity representing deaf and hard of hearing people. They have recently launched ‘Sound Solutions’, a must-have guide for anyone wishing to understand more about deaf access. Sound Solutions has a wealth of information about the equipment RNID Products provides, including:

- Installed induction loop and infrared systems

- Portable loop systems like the RNID Ezee Loop, the clipboard loop and the conference folder loop

- RNID’s award-winning TalkByText software which allows frontline staff or those working with deaf colleagues to make and receive real-time text calls on their
computer

- Soundfield systems: sound reinforcement equipment that amplifies a speaker’s voice and distributes it at an equal level
throughout the room.

- Tour guide systems that help tour leaders communicate well with deaf and hard of hearing people

- Personal listeners that can be useful in a wide range of situations and can be used to test loop systems are working

- RNID Products don’t just supply the
equipment though; they can also install it and provide maintenance cover and training

Not every organisation has the same needs. Businesses with customer service departments will need to give more focus to the telecommunications products, while
loop systems are more relevant when face-to-face communication is more common. So, selecting the right solution is not ‘one size fits all’.

“Clearly any architect or specifier will consider who will use a building and how they use it during the design stage,” says Mark Catling, Director at RNID Products. “Ensuring a good acoustic environment and planning the provision of hearing support into a building’s design will help to deliver a seamless and highly beneficial service to deaf and hard of hearing customers and staff.”

With an ageing population and a generation of people listening to loud music this issue is more important than ever. Much
like with global warming, anyone who reacts quickly to the situation is going to put themselves at a distinct advantage. For further details contact RNID Products on 01733 361199, email solutions@rnid.org.uk or download a copy of Sound Solutions
